What is TrueType Font?

It is originally developed by Apple Computer in the late 1980s and has become the most common font format on both the Mac OS and Microsoft Windows operating systems. TrueType fonts can be scaled to any size and are clear and readable in all sizes. TrueType fonts are easier to install as it contain both the screen and printer font data in one file, but a different file is needed for each type-setting (e.g., normal, bold, italic, bold italic, etc).

What is OpenType Font?

OpenType format is a more recent format than TrueType, it is a joint effort from Adobe and Microsoft. Like TrueType, OpenType fonts contain both the screen and printer font data in a single file. OpenType fonts are cross-platform compatible making it easier to use same font file on both Mac OS or Windows operating systems, it has several exclusive capabilities like, it support greater extension of the basic character set, including old-style numerals, smallcaps, alternates, ligatures and more detailed shapes. OpenType fonts are also clear and readable in all sizes.

Installing fonts on Windows 8/8.1

On Windows 8 and 8.1 go to Control Panel and click Appearance and Personalization, and then click Fonts to access it. Their is shortcut to access Fonts directly also just press the Windows key once to open the Start menu or Start screen, type "Fonts" to search your system, and click the Fonts folder shortcut that appears. From here, you can preview your installed fonts.

Installing fonts on Windows 7

Double-click on a font file to open the font preview and select 'Install'. Or you can also right click on the font file you just downloaded and click on 'Install'. That's it. Make sure you have Administrator privileges on target machine to install fonts.

Installing fonts on Windows Vista

Right-click on the font file and then select 'Install'. Or you can also drag or paste a font into the Fonts (you can open Fonts folder from Control Panel).

Installing fonts on XP

  1. From the 'Start' menu select 'Control Panel', then select the 'Appearance and Themes' category.
  2. Select 'Fonts' from the 'See Also' panel at the left of this screen.
  3. On the 'File' menu, select 'Install New Font...'
  4. Click the drive and folder that contain the fonts you want to add.
  5. To select more than one font to add, press and hold down the CTRL key, click the fonts you want, then click on 'OK'.

Installing fonts on Mac OS X

  1. Drag the font onto the closed System Folder icon.
  2. A dialog box appears asking you to confirm the action. Click 'OK'. The files are moved to the correct location(s).
